Deer & Deer Hunting is moving from Iola to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, as of Monday. So, if today’s post sounds choppy, well, it should. I’m typing these words on a makeshift work station as moving carts whizz by my desk.
Deer & Deer Hunting has called Iola home for the past 26 years. I’ve worked on the title for more than 23. It’s a sad end to a chapter, sure, but it’s also the exciting start of a new beginning for all of us. Historical note: Deer & Deer Hunting began in Appleton, Wis., in 1977 and was stationed there until the founders sold the title to Krause Publications in 1992. Krause was purchased by F+W Media about 10 years later.
From the notation on the local archery shop’s hand-painted sign, Iola has been known locally as the “Bowhunting Capital of the World” for decades. It’s been a great place to live (pop. less than 1,000 most of those years) and, of course, hunt. But Stevens Point is no slouch either. Located just up the road in Portage County, the area is much of the same: Heaven on earth for any white-tailed deer fanatic.
So many fond memories of this building (founded by coin and car collector Chet Krause in the early 1950s), the community and, most of all, the people. I met Tracy while working here in 1997, and we will be celebrating 18 years of blissful marriage later this year. Heck of a lot of venison consumed in that time. And thank you, Tracy, for turning a blind eye to your Boston-raised ways to learn to love a guy who has dragged countless deer into your driveway, garage and freezers (and adorned way too many antlers to your walls).
For all of you Deer & Deer Hunting fans who might be wondering, the only thing that will change to the magazine, books and TV shows: our physical mailing address. Our phones numbers remain the same.
Our new address:
Deer & Deer Hunting
5225 Joerns Drive
Stevens Point, WI 54481
Here’s to many more happy years to celebrating what we celebrate best: The white-tailed deer and the lifestyle (not sport) that fuels our minds, bodies and souls.
To borrow a phrase from our cofounder Jack Brauer: THINK DEER!
