East Hampton Expands Bowhunting Opportunities

The town board of East Hampton approved unanimously a vote to expand bowhunting opportunities for whitetail deer on four city-owned tracts.

New York’s famed getaway for city folk may not seem like a deer haven, but the long island has a sizable population. Autumn bowhunting hasn’t helped thin the populations and so the city’s leaders began looking at ways to offer more opportunities.

“It’s a matter of safety,” town Supervisor Bill Williams said in a New York Newsday report. Complaints about vehicle accidents and incidents of Lyme disease from ticks have overpowered the unscientific and passion-based complaints of anti-hunters.

Among the 362 acres in four tracts are 56 acres of the Duke Estate and 199 on two tracts in Montauk.
