The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announces the limited expansion of the opportunity for bowhunters to carry handguns during archery-only season, which opens October 15, 2011.
This regulation change creates the opportunity statewide for archery hunters otherwise authorized by law to carry handguns in the field for personal protection. However, such handguns may not be used to hunt game animals that are not already open to firearms hunting.
While some consideration had been given to expanding the regulation change to include all firearms, such action has been postponed for further evaluation.
Conservation Commissioner N. Gunter Guy Jr. said, "This change has been made to conform to an existing regulation that allows the possession of handguns by legally licensed persons in any Wildlife Management Area (220-2-.21). We also want to afford more opportunity for hunters for personal protection and for taking legal game such as feral hogs. However, before action is taken to allow all firearms for archery hunters, we want to ensure that there is ample public notice and time for a comment period."

I DO A LOT OF GROUND PIT-SMOKING, WHICH IS VERY SIMPLE, EASY AND CAN FEED A WHOLE PARTY. HERE IT IS: DIG A RECTANGULAR PIT IN THE GROUND, APPROX 2 ONE-HALF FEET X FOUR FEET (HOLE/PIT) IN GROUND. SIZE DEPENDS ON TYPE OF GAME. LINE PIT WITH OSTLY FLAT ROCKS. NOW BUILD YOUR HEAT BY COVERING BOTTOM WITH MATERIAL TO MAKE A SIX IN OR SO BED OF COALS, ( USE YOUR FAVORITE WOOD AND CHAR-COAL), I USE OAK, APPLE AND HICKORY. NITAPER THE SIDES OF THE PIT SO AS TO PLACE SOAKED STAVES OF MESQUITE WOOD, (STICKS) ABOVE THE COALS LINED NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER TO MAKE AWOODEN GRATE UPON WHICH I PLACE MY WHOLE DEER, SKINNED AND BUSTED TO LAY FLAT ON TOP OF THE WOOD GRATE WHERE IT CAN RECEIVE HEAT FROM THE COALS AND SMOKE FROM THE SEARING MESQUITE. THERE ARE NO FLAMES TO CATCH THE WOODEN GRATE ON FIRE FOR YOUR COALS ARE SMOLTERING HOT. HAVE SEASONED YOUR MEAT HOW WANTED. EVERYONE HAS THEIROWN RECIPE FOR THIS AND JUST COVER THE TOP OF THE PIT, GROUND LEVEL, WITH SHEET IRON, (TIN SIDING). THIS PROCESS WILL HOOK YOU FOREVER ON PIT COOKING. NO FANCY STORE BOUGHT, NO BIG BUCKS, JUST THE BEST EATING IN THE WORLD, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. THANKS JOHN MCCOMIC, KILGORE, TX. BY THE WAY, LEARNED IT FROM MY CHEROKEE UNCLE.
Good move Alabama to clearly define. Arkansas spells it out now Tennessee defined in their regs as well. I hunt both states and would like to hunt Alabama this season. I see no reason any Legally Licensed Carry Permit holder should not be allowed to carry in the “woods”. Why not? It’s permitted to carry on your person most anywhere else. I have used my weapon only once ……. That Coyote won’t bother any deer again.
Grilled venison backstrap
1. apply a little olive oil over backstrap & then put a dry rub on it. Cabela’s wildgame rub or any spicy rub will work.
2. seal the backstap in saran wrap.
3. inject the backstrap with a toast garlic marinade & put in refrigerator for 3-4 hours. You can also let it sit overnight.
4. take it out of refrigerator & let it get to room temperture.
5. get a very hot fire or grill.
6. remove saran wrap & grill to char the outside & have medium rare on inside.
7. Cut into medalions & enjoy!
