Lowest Number of Deer Tags Offered in 34 Years

Deer hunters are losing more than 11,500 hunting permits from last season due to a continued decline in population numbers and more than 2 million acres of Conservation Reserve Program habitat being put back into crop use.

North Dakota buckNorth Dakota hunters will find themselves with fewer opportunities this year. Randy Kreil, wildlife chief for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said hunters don’t mind the losses, though, because they want population numbers to rebound. He said responses from hunters indicate fewer tags will be accepted to help with plans to help the deer numbers.

Lost permits this season include 6,500 fewer for any-antlerless, 1,000 fewer for whitetail does and 3,900 fewer for bucks.

Mule deer permits were increased in the Badlands area, but antlerless permits still are under tight restriction in some areas.
