On Tuesday, a hunter charged with killing a woman he mistook for a deer accepted a plea deal. He was ordered to serve nine months in jail for manslaughter.
The victim’s family members said the plea deal was not harsh enough. They said the hunter, Robert Trundy of Hebron, Maine, did not aid the victim after hearing her scream.
The 34-year-old victim, Karen Wrentzel, was shot and killed as she was digging for gemstones on her property on the first day of the 2017 Maine deer hunting season.
Trundy admitted to game wardens he never actually saw the outline of a deer. The wardens said he shot from 200 feet (61 meters) away. Trundy said he called his hunting partner, his 72-year-old father, to report his actions after realizing he was unable to assist the victim.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Trundy addressed the victim in court. “I lost my soul that day, and you lost your life. You are with me when I wake up in the morning and when I go to sleep at night,” Trundy said.
