15-Year-Old Hunter Misses, Later Bags 161-Inch Buck

Late summer 2023, a massive buck that everyone referred to as Brows was showing up on several neighboring properties, including a property that 15-year-old Cole Lundy and father Sean had permission to hunt.

Cole has harvested numerous deer, but this buck could be his biggest to date. “I have never seen someone work so hard to connect on a deer,” said Sean on Instagram. On Oct. 1, 2023, Cole and his father were hunting in northern Indiana when Brows appeared. Cole came back to full draw with his dad behind the camera and released an arrow at 33 yards, shooting just inches in front of the deer. After missing this opportunity, Cole was beside himself, but his father Sean assured him that this was part of hunting like he has taught him over and over and it was OK. Cole was heartbroken at the moment. “We were still very excited for an opportunity like this with a deer of that caliber at a very young age,” said Sean.

Fast forward just 22 days into October and numerous hunts over the last few weeks. Cole had several bucks that he was hoping to get a chance at with his bow. On Oct. 22, while in the stand on an afternoon hunt, Cole was watching the woods when he and his father heard something crashing in the corn. It was a respectful 8-pointer, and Cole was more than excited to hopefully get an opportunity yet. With this deer closing the distance and making his way within 30 yards, Cole stood up in the stand, attached his release and was getting ready to come back to full draw when out of the corner of his eye appeared the deer they had an encounter with on Oct. 1. The whole tree started to shake as the buck walked in.

Cole told his dad quietly in the tree, “Dad it’s him, it’s him. It’s Brows.” At that moment, both bucks noticed each other and turned as they postured up toward one another. A small sparring fight took place and a short time later the smaller 8-pointer made his way off. Brows then began to make a scrape and a short time later started to walk broadside of Cole at 31 yards. With both Cole and his dad Sean trying to hold it together, not only to harvest this animal but to capture the moment on film, the situation became real just knowing that this would be Cole’s time for redemption.

The moment came where the deer stopped at 31 yards broadside, and Cole came back to full draw. Almost like it was meant to be, the deer took one step slightly quartering away and turned his head toward the smaller buck that was walking off, presenting Cole with the shot we all dream of. Cole then released the arrow which found its mark absolutely perfectly on this magnificent deer. The deer ran approximately 70 yards where they could hear him crash.

The emotion in the tree at this time was overwhelming with both father and son, in tears, realizing that Cole just harvested his No. 1 target buck and a deer of a lifetime for most hunters. Cole kept saying to his father over and over again, “Dad I did exactly what you said. I put it exactly where you told me to put it. I think I smoked him.” Sean, trying to calm Cole down, assured him that the shot was absolutely perfect, while still at this time, both of them trying to control their emotion and tears during an unbelievable father-son moment in the outdoors.

A very short track job led them to the deer of Cole’s dreams and one he had very many sleepless nights over. Brows Was Down! And this will be one moment for a father and son that will last forever.

Cole is an avid hunter and has been featured numerous times on outdoor television and articles with his father Sean and currently still filming for several shows and digital platforms.
