I would have started writing this beautiful NugeBlog celebration of all things, truth, logic, common sense, American Dream Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness a little while ago, but I had to put my socks on.
“Huh!” you might say? Where in the world could the old Nuge be headed with a first sentence like that?
Well, I thought I would celebrate the joys and not so joys of getting old, and how heretofore simple tasks in life are not so simple any longer.
I suppose this is what I get for launching off all those stacks of amplifiers like a madman leaping gnome all those years. I sure wish someone would have mentioned the existence of the meniscus!
Daily pain in my legs, new knees, lower back, hips and shoulders are a sure sign that I am still here, but when it comes to shooting my Mathews bow, I am beginning to feel it deep down inside my arms, shoulders and skeleton.
I’ve always advocated and diligently promoted lighter draw weight bows for all the obvious reasons; increased pleasure to shoot more often, better accuracy, better overall control and form, especially under bowhunting field conditions, and just overall painless fun.
Did you know that the famous Ann Hoyt killed all big game in North America with a 35-pound recurve shooting 600-grain cedar arrows at around 175 feet per second? Do you know that Mrs. Nugent kills all but dangerous game with a 35-pound Mathews and slow, 400-grain Gold Tip arrows?
The incredible Fred Eichler kills all sorts of big game with his 43-pound Bear recurve.
I kill everything with my 45- to 50-pound Mathews, a 400-grain, 30-inch Gold Tip arrow and various broadheads.
I have killed many a big-game critter with crossbows over many years and each hunt was certainly fun. And I understand the fascination and exploding interest in the amazing advanced crossbow technology, and salute, support and congratulate all hunters no matter their personal choice in weapon.
But I for one am addicted to the pure archery excitement and thrill that comes from the supreme challenge of getting to full draw at spine-tingling close range to the wary beasts.
I am in no way against crossbows, nor have any negative feelings whatsoever about these wonderful weapons. The only goal of this NugeBlog is to let all you bowhunters know that just because you can’t comfortably draw back your 60- or 70-pound bow, does NOT mean you have to go to a crossbow.
I hear from my fellow bowhunters from around the country on a daily basis, and every time I hear a tale of woe about sore muscles and limbs, they for some strange reason think they have to have all that poundage to be a bowhunter.
YOU DO NOT!
Surely, it you want to hunt with a crossbow, have at it and enjoy it to the limit.
But, if you want to maintain the thrill that is unique to vertical archery, get yourself a lightweight, comfortable, fun-to-shoot bow that is effortless to shoot, load up a strong, razor-sharp two-blade solid broadhead, and bowhunt to your heart’s content!
That’s what I do and I am having more fun, shooting better than ever and killing more game with my 45-pound Mathews, a 400-grain Gold Tip arrow and mostly the inexpensive 125-grain two-blade Cold Steel BoneSaw broadhead.
You know you want to draw back your bow at that hard-earned moment of stealthy truth, and fire off your mystical flight of the arrow under that magical tension of full draw!
We are getting closer to the season every day and now is the time to become one with your weapon of choice.
I’m shooting lots of arrows every day and getting pretty darn good at this bow-and-arrow stuff for an old, tired, sore guy. I just know this is going to be the greatest hunting season of my life, and I can’t wait to challenge the mighty white-tailed deer in my sacred swamps, fields and forests.
When the bewitching hour arrives and the beast is in range, I just know my lightweight rig will do its job and the reward of spirit and backstraps will be mine.
