Raised in the historical whitetail bowhunting epicenter of Fred Bear’s Michigan “Up North” big timber country, my youthful vision of deerhunting was limited to my homestate species for many years. And quite honestly, if a guy never hunted anything else, our happy whitetail hunting cup would runneth over with total satisfaction and predator glee.
By Ted Nugent
Little did I know that I would someday be lucky enough to live the dream of taking my trusty bows and arrows around the world in pursuit of so many fascinating, wonderful game animals, and indeed, my happy cup doeth runneth over fulltime!
Years ago I was privileged to be invited to try my luck at a Northern California blacktail deer, the California subspecies of mule deer. Hardcore bowhunting BloodBrothers Mitch Moore and Ross Patterson gifted me with a phenomenal hunt way up high in the wilderness where a certain old apple orchard cut into the towering redwood forests and my arrows found their mark on mature trophy stags the kind that dreams are made of.
This earliest U.S. deerseason kicks off in early July in certain regions of the state, and a bowhunter can obtain two tags for two blacktail bucks. It is as hot and dry deerhunting as one will ever experience, and this year with the prolonged drought sucking the burning air out of the entire state, the challenge and logistics can prove to be rather considerable.
Another gungho deerhunting BloodBrother, Loren Morelli and his beautiful wife Kris own another chunk of God’s country and have been dedicated hunters their entire California Dreaming lives.
This deer, turkey, bear, lion, coyote, hog and small game heaven is just north of the concrete city hell of San Francisco, and once you leave the pavement and towering cityscape behind, you enter what many of us consider to be the real California and she is spectacular.
The rolling, burnt grass covered hills are best described as genuine mountains, and attempting to ascend them in the brutal naked sun heat is a task best suited for younger souls without double knee replacement surgery!
In and amongst the steep hills are pockets, draws and valleys of thick, impenetrable puckerbrush, oaks, various coniferous growth, Mazanita and more species of vegetation than I can name. It is beautiful country and stunning wildlife habitat.
Beyond San Fran, LA and San Diego is a California of earthy, grounded, salt of the earth hunters, fishers, trappers, farmers, ranchers and workin’ hard playin’ hard rugged individuals the likes of which you would find around any traditional deerhunting campfire in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Idaho, Utah, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio or anywhere else where hunting remains a dedicated lifestyle and a powerful quality of life endeavor.
California deerhunters are the real McCoy and I salute those that defy the bizarre politically correct odds against them in a state where freedom is being systematically and constantly regulated out of existence by power abusing bureaucrats gone mad.
Hang in there California BloodBrothers, your fellow deerhunters everywhere stand with you!
Taking my beautiful wife Shemane and wonderful son Rocco on a California wine country adventure for their birthdays, I was very fortunate to have Mitch and Loren do some killer scouting for me in some grand deer country. They set up some great ladderstands in ideal ambush corridors and we put in the hours for three days for some hopeful blacktail backstraps.
I was able to kill a nasty old coyote and a fat jackrabbit, but as I wrapup my NUGEBLOG#98 after a great three day bowhunt, I’m afraid I will head home this time without a deer kill.
With many friends in this part of the country, I got strict orders from my rock-n-roll buddy Sammy Hagar that he desperately wanted some pure, freerange, organic venison for the grill, so I shall return as soon as possible, feeling a little more pressure than usual!
