HAPPY December my backstrap BloodBrothers!
I missed one hellofa great mature trophy whitetail buck this morning. Huge old wide heavy 10 pointer. I’m calling him a 6 maybe 7 year old, big, fat, stud of the Texas Hill Country monarch. I still hurt!

After many hours, as usual, in my tree, the “gimme” shot of all bowhunters’ dreams unfolded before SpiritWild VidCamDude Kris Helms and I, and at a phenomenally easy 18 yards, this hulk stopped quartering away to gobble up some Primos Swamp Donkey goo, and though I have expertly arrowed many a fine beast this season, and over a lifetime, I somehow stumbled like a drunk goofball back into the “stop breathing” rookie hell of years gone by, and when the pin settled on his ever-loving crease to the pumpstation, I blew it.
Having gone rigid from a flashpoint of terminal, brainwarp buckfever, I failed to properly align my predator torso into the good shooting form I have trained diligently for and executed so flawlessly so many millions of times before, and when I touched off my TruFire trigger, the lower limb of my Mathews struck the knee that I didn’t move out of the way and my pretty 400 grain Nuge GoldTip zebra arrow skimmed over the buck’s back.
It ain’t right. It ain’t fair. I need help. Counseling. Psycho blather therapy. Something!
Thank God I have backstraps to soothe my soul, and of course there is always this afternoon hunt to try and make up for it.
But damn was I frustrated. Big buck. Doggone it.
Anyway, what I really wanted to carryon with you all about here on my 66th deeranddeerhunting.com NugeBlog was a salute and sincere, hearty “attaboy” to all you deerhunters out there who remain strapless as we dive into the late season.
I know all too well not just from my hands-on, boots on the frozen ground lifetime perspective of strapless seasons more often than I care to recall, but most dynamically because my best hunting buddy and son Toby has been hard at it for near on 3 months, and the young man is SKUNKED!
(WOW! I just ran outside at our Texas SpiritWild Ranch home as Happy and Gonzo the WonderLabs were barking up a storm and raising serious hound yowling hell down by the pond thicket, which of course could only mean they had a coon or squirrel treed. Now normally I don’t shoot anything within 100 or so yards of our house, but the limbrat terrorism they have unleashed on our birdfeeders and grain bins called me to action. I had only an hour ago cleaned one of our Ruger 10/22 rifles removing the old broken scope to mount a new Bushnell, and had grabbed my suppressed (silenced) Ruger to exercise the quieter rifle for a few days. Since it was sitting right here next to me and the dogs were begging for some action, I just had to join them and I headshot the little booger way, WAY up in the top canopy of an ancient oak. Only took a few minutes away from my NugeBlog, but the dogs and I are so dang happy, how could I resist!)
Okay, I’m back!
So as I was saying, gungho deerhunting son Toby has really put in the hours, smart, hardcore hours, but has come up empty handed, so far.
So this NugeBlog is clearly not just for my backstrap challenged son, but for all you hardcore deerhunters out there that are still at it. Some of the best deerhunting to be had is still ahead of us.
On our historic sacred family deergrounds in Michigan, I am extremely confident that Toby will get his deer. He never gives up no matter what. I am also even more confident that when he joins me here in Texas he will even more likely kill a deer or a few.
So as we stalk into December, I wish you all goodluck, Godspeed and good hunting. I am at it everyday here in the epicenter of deer Texas, and I know that the best hunting is yet to come.
