Video: Brave Police Officers Free Locked Bucks After Shooting One with a Taser

Finding two bucks with locked antlers used to be a word-of-mouth thing, one of those “Hey, did you hear about Bob saying he found those two deer down by McGillicuddy’s farm near the creek?”

Thanks to today’s social media and phones with video, we have seen more of these situations. The latest comes from the South Lake Minnetonka (Minn.) police department, which had a trio of brave officers with a Taser and electric saws to get the job done.

Brave, you ask? Yeah, we think so. Dealing with a beast of an animal, even locked up, and not knowing for sure what might happen takes some guts. Big bucks with giant antlers could do anything, even when momentarily paralyzed and incapacitated by the Taser.

Kudos to the officers for not just shooting the deer, as some would do. Even if it was exhausted from dragging around the other buck, which was dead, at least after being freed it had a chance to survive.

Hat tip on the video to LiveLeak.com. Check out the photos below of the incident:

After being called about the two locked bucks and arriving on the scene, officers debated their options and decided to try to separate the deer. This officer moved in with a Taser to try to get a shot to temporarily paralyze the buck.

The buck is thrashing and finally stops momentarily, giving the officer a chance to quickly move toward it with the Taser. He releases the Taser and the electrodes hit the buck squarely, as the officer’s training paid off with a direct shot. The buck is stunned and begins grunting before falling to the ground still locked with the second buck.

As soon as the officers ascertain that the buck is incapacitated, they move in with electric saws to cut the antlers. Because a whitetail deer’s antlers are bone and incredibly hard, even a tough saw has to work hard to get through.

A second officer moves in with another saw to help cut the antlers apart. It’s easily noticeable that the two bucks are mature and have solid, healthy racks. While this is going on the living buck is still incapacitated by the Taser.

After the officer saws through the buck’s antler the two deer finally become unlocked. The living one is free yet still paralyzed by the Taser, but not for long. An officer moves the dead buck away so the living one won’t thrash and maybe get hung up again.

It doesn’t take long for the stunned buck to start stirring and then take off, a bit wobbly but apparently OK. Whether it survived is unknown. Bucks that fight and lock antlers often both die because of the stress put on the living one dragging the dead one around. Maybe this buck made it and will be seen again. Kudos to the South Minnetonka Police officers for helping out in a non-lethal way for this tough buck.
