In a rare video, a cow elk (female) was captured hunting birds. She starts off chasing starlings around a pond, then moves on to a family of geese. Despite valiant efforts by the geese, the elk eventually kills and partially eats one of the goslings. The remaining five goslings make it safely to the water along with the two geese.
Elk, which are a kind of deer, are opportunistic eaters. We have seen a few videos of deer eating birds and even a squirrel circling the internet. Scientists say a large range of herbivores, including deer, will occasionally eat other animals, or animal parts they find laying around. This could be motivated by a need for calcium. A deer was even photographed once eating human remains. Nature is pretty wild!
