Lucky Me! Intoxicating Deerhunting Memories!

Ted with a great Texas 8-pointerIt was a magic time in this brave new world, and all of America was still very much high on celebrating our clear and present World War II victory of good over evil, and the Nugent tribe was living it to the max on the not so mean streets of Detroit, Michigan.

When I was born in 1948, my dear old dad, Warren Henry Nugent, fresh out of the pure hell of war, was already a follower of the great Fred Bear. There is no question how the effervescent mystical flight of the arrow and the peaceful Michigan deerwoods performed a soul cleansing remedy for those GI’s returning home. I’ve been honored and blessed to know, communicate with, and share many deerhunting campfires with many of these WWII heroes, and the deerhunting lifestyle surely represented much more than sport and recreation to each and every one of them.

Across the neighborhood streets of our Detroit home was a paradise of wildlife habitat along the winding, woodland banks of the mighty Rouge River. My every waking moment was spent in these magical wildgrounds, learning the powerful lessons of critters and the sacred grounds that supported them. There truly is a “call of the wild”, and I heard it loud and clear.

Oh lucky, lucky me!

Like all kids of that era, with our Boy Scout pocketknives we instinctively whittled our own crude makeshift bows and arrows from various saplings growing along the jungle like riverine course. Back then, I had never encountered a boy who didn’t have a Red Ryder BB gun, a WhamO slingshot and some sort of bow and arrow.

Most of the kids played hockey, baseball, football, basketball, some golf and horseshoes. And though I dabbled in some of those traditional sports now and then, none of them sparked enough of my interest to keep me away from my beloved critter woods.

With busted shovels and hoes we salvaged from weekly junk raids on “trash day.” We constructed tunnels and forts down by the river, learning the basics of human survival and rugged individualism. Thank God we didn’t have electronic devices to divert our attention from real life lessons and turn us into softies.

As I smile fondly on the immeasurable joys and memories of my 2014/15 deerseason all these many years later, I am genuinely intrigued and gratified by the continuing connection with all who celebrate this greatest of sports/lifestyles that all of so cherish.

The challenges of killing a deer with bow or firearm was stimulating beyond description back then, and regardless of the phenomenal advances in various technologies, I can honestly say that this past season provided every bit the excitement, ups, downs, frustrations and ultimately the same joy as every season I have been blessed with since the 1950s.

WOW! That’s a longrun of deerhunting anyway you measure it, and I am absolutely certain that October 2015 will erupt into more of the same. As dad taught me so well, you only get out of life what you’re willing to put into it, and when it comes to deerhunting, I am proud to stand with all my BloodBrothers that put everything we got into it!

Only a few more months to go BloodBrothers. Never give up the spirit, and never forget to cherish every very special day as deerhunters.
