My Mystical Flight Life as a Bloodbrother

My whole life flashed before me in a heartbeat. Amazing how such an outrageous 68 year adventure can be encapsulated in the instantaneous flash of the mystical flight of an arrow, but somehow, it happens.

And it happens all the time. Literally, all the time. And that’s because I shoot my bow all the time. Have since I could walk way back in the stone-age of 1949.

As the great Jimi Hendrix once lamented; “There ain’t no life nowhere! Excuse me while I kiss the sky!”

The phenomenon of bowhunting tunnel-vision is at once both intoxicating and soul cleansing. Nothing, and I do mean nothing exists outside the arrow-path view to the pumpstation of the beast.

There were other beautiful deer in sight, but the target buck owned my soul and beckoned my meat-seeking missile as if in a dream.

As if!

So my heartbeat and predator trained spirit were one with the wind, one with the beast, one with the invisible tractor-beam to the entrance crease behind his foreleg as the buck finally turned broadside and my Mathews bow came to fulldraw without thought or effort.

My whole life flashed before me in a heartbeat!

If not for that beautiful glowing orange Lumenok I would have had no way of knowing where my arrow hit, but the immeasurable joy of a perfect arrow will only be known and immensely celebrated by dedicated and or lucky bowhunters everywhere.

The spontaneous eruption of glee and over the top happiness in that little groundblind is the essence of the hunter’s life.

With a stunning golden Texas sunrise shimmering behind us, the SpiritWild VidCam captured this always special moment for the whole world to share on our award winning Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV show on Outdoor Channel all these 27 years later.

I was joined by SpiritWild VidCamDude Kris Helms and Ace High Ranch guide Brandon Garrett for a slow, methodical, always thrilling blood-trailing party through the Live Oak and cedar jungle to the magnificent beast.

Like all bowhunters, the three of us knew all too well all the lifetime hardcore effort, hard work, practice and dedication that goes into this major feat, and a quiet reverential celebration took place in this magic spot on this magic occasion.

From the earliest days with a stick and string to today’s high-tech compounds and gear, Uncle Ted has loved every second in the outdoors!

This wasn’t my first buck of the season, certainly wasn’t the first buck in my long bowhunting life, but miraculously, it was as exciting, demanding, challenging, fun and thrilling as if it were.

Which brings me to January 12, 2017, where all my bowhunting BloodBrothers from around the world are gathering at the annual Archery Trade Association (ATA) show in Indianapolis, Indiana.

But alas, Ol’ Backstrap addicted Uncle Ted is not there with them, and it may have something to do with my 121 days of nonstop bowhunting since September 5, 2016, and this last week of frigid conditions on my old, worn, tattered body.

Or maybe it is just God’s way of telling me to back it down a notch, get some rest and give it a break to recharge and refortify my predator spirit for the demanding month plus of bowhunting still ahead.

Either way, as much as I would love to be there with everyone who shares my pure animal passion for bowhunting, it is indeed a good man who knows his limitations, so here I sit, hacking away with a nasty case of savage bronchitis while all my buddies are sharing stories and fondling all the latest and greatest bowhunting gear and technology in Indy.

The meds have already kicked in noticeably, and I have big plans for this weekend. The weather is much milder and there is this big, old gnarly 100 year old Live Oak tree down in the gulch that the wind is perfect for, and I bet I will feel well enough to climb aboard in a day or two to get back in the bowhunting saddle.

These tags in my pocket make me very uncomfortable, so I must dedicate myself to punching out the dates and putting them to proper use.

The herds must be balanced, the freezers must be filled, and the mystical flight of my arrow must be sent into the hinterlands of strapdom.

The path of the arrow is my life and my life is the path of my arrow. Aim small miss small my BloodBrothers. May the beasts live forever in your belly and your soul.
