What Happens in the Land of Panthers, Bears and Summer Deer Season?

It’s quite a difference going from parkas and fires to sweating and 90 degrees at 9 a.m., but that’s what the Destination Whitetail crew does on the next episode.

Florida Season Opening Day 2012 009The team bids adieu to the northern tip of Michigan to head all the way down to southwest Florida for the opening day of the 2012 deer season. The show airs on the Sportsman Channel tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST.

The Destination Whitetail cameras venture east of Fort Myers, Fla., to private land grazed by cattle and reminiscent of the way things looked more than a century ago. North of the Everglades, the famed “River of Grass,” the hunters are seeking a deer on the first day of the nation’s whitetail deer season.

Bow season in Florida’s southernmost zone opens in late summer and coincides with the rut; the Destination Whitetail team watched bucks chasing does and local hunters said scrapes and rubs are common. The area is home to the endangered Florida panther, black bears, snakes, incredible bird life and more. It’s quite different! It’s also hot, with temperatures climbing rapidly above 90 degrees just a few hours after sunrise.

Tune in to find out if our hunters are able to accomplish something truly unique: tagging the very first buck of the season.

Check out all the action on Destination Whitetail on the Sportsman Channel Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. EST and 11:30 p.m. EST, plus an additional showing on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. EST.

Destination Whitetail, produced by F+W Outdoors, premiered in 2012 on the Sportsman Channel. The series investigates the people, places and ways to hunt whitetail throughout North America. In the 43 states that have deer populations, their habitat varies as greatly as the traditions and methods used to hunt them.

Destination Whitetail goes behind the scenes with some of the outdoor industry’s most prolific personalities and learns how whitetails have contributed to their success. After its first season, Destination Whitetail was named a finalist for the 2012 Sportsman Choice Awards for “Best New Series.”
