Update: 49-Point Wisconsin Buck

The controversial 300-plus inch nontypical buck that appeared at a recent Wisconsin deer and turkey expo is still allegedly under consideration as a new state-record muzzleloader kill.

The buck, which was allegedly killed last December in Marquette County, was entered with the Wisconsin Buck & Bear Club during its annual scoring conference at the Open Season deer and turkey expo. The club panel-scored the buck twice during the expo, and then presented it among other trophies with a description reading “Pending Non-Typical State Record – Gun (Muzzleloader).”

On Monday, Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club officials convened to discuss the matter. Their decision, if made last night, has not been made public, and when asked if the club would have any idea when a decision would be made public, a source close to the situation stated, “Not really.”

If accepted, the 49-point buck would shatter the Wisconsin record for nontypical whitetails.

For size perspective, the WBBC officially panel-scored a state record nontypical whitetail buck killed by Jim Baker while bowhunting Sept. 18, 2013, in Waukesha County. The “Jim Baker Buck” has 28 measurable points, a 19-7/8″ inside spread, and 66-6/8″ of abnormal points.

The story took a dramatic twist after the expo when a photo emerged of a nontypical game-farm deer that looks strikingly similar to the buck registered with the Wisconsin DNR as a fair-chase kill this past December.

In an exclusive interview with D&DH last week, an antler-scoring expert with more than 30 years of record-keeping experience today said there’s “no way” a 49-point, 316-inch buck from Wisconsin was a legitimate free-range whitetail.
