Merry Deerhunting Christmas

A very Merry Christmas to all my fellow hunting, fishing, trapping, conservation families around the world. What a wonderful hunting season it has been so far, and more importantly, what a wonderful hunting season it will continue to be for many of us well into the New Year of 2022.

Christmas time around the Nugent camp is mighty darn exciting, to say the least.

Growing up in the shadow of “Leave It to BeaverAmerica in the 1950s and ’60s provided an out and out orgy of Christmas family fun and excitement.

The tree, the decorations, trimmings, lights, gifts, stockings on the mantle, food, smells, sounds, sights, songs, laughter and huge family gatherings made this time of year so very special.

All those wonderful, special occurrences continue to make Christmas time unique in the American calendar year, but one thing for me that stands out as powerful as all that is, the incredible deerhunting that happens as December throttles on to the end of the year and winter is truly upon us.

My lifetime as a Michigan bowhunter always got better and better as the season continued, and the Christmas week always seemed to be quite possibly the best deerhunting week of all.

Colder temperatures and good snowfall increased not only the deer activity, but also triggered a more intense predator desire within to get out there into these dynamic wintery elements.

Of course, everyone knows nothing says Merry Christmas quite like a beautiful, crimson bloodtrail on a fresh snowfall, and to my way of thinking, represents the most beautiful, natural Christmas decoration of all!

With the holiday period signaling the imminent end of the Michigan season, I couldn’t wait to head down to Texas for more bowhunting fun.

Now as a longtime resident of the amazing Lone Star State deerhunting heaven, I might miss the snow hunting, but more than make up for it with another 60 days of whitetail hunting!

Did you hear that? Another 60 days of deerhunting!

That’s right; I bowhunt white-tailed deer every day in January and February, and it is some of the best deerhunting of the season to be found anywhere.

States like Arkansas also hunt deer right up to March, and many other sates go well into January to provide for adequate harvest and maximum family hours of recreation, while dramatically increasing the gonzo bankroll of revenues associated with these extended seasons and opportunities.

Now that’s how to best say Merry Christmas to my way of thinking!

Here’s hoping you all have the greatest family Christmas celebration of your lives, and maximize the positive spirit and joys associated with this grand celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

And here’s hoping you get out there and brave the beautiful winter conditions and get in as much deerhunting as you can, for tiz the season to be jolly, and very few things in life provide as much jolly as a day in the deerwoods doing God’s work balancing the herd and unwrapping the greatest gift of all.

I suppose I will forego a Christmas morning hunt so as to rise and shine with my loved ones. But before the big Christmas dinner is served, I am sure I will be on stand, bow and arrow in hand, celebrating a fine day on God’s earth flexing the pure reasoning predator instinct to be one with His creation.

Now that’s a Christmas gift that is hard to beat. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
