Turn Up The Nature Radar to be a Deadlier Predator

I cannot imagine anything in life much more inspiring than being welcomed into the lives and families of US Military warriors. Since the 1960s, I have been immensely blessed and humbled to be invited to share campfires with these heroes and their families, and I have learned much about how quality of life comes from focus, sacrifice and dedication and a gungho attitude.

These super humans have too many extraordinary attributes to list here, but for my fellow backstrap addicted deeranddeerhunting.com BloodBrothers, they can be best summed up as a “higher level of awareness”.

And if anything in our human reasoning predator lives will have the most beneficial impact on our deerhunting success, it is indeed a higher level of awareness.

It is what I call “the predator radar.”

The early bird catches the worm and the most tuned in hunters amongst us will be blessed with the happiest hunts, the most backstraps and/or largest trophy buck, whichever you prefer.

It’s still the lazy, hazy, laid back days of summertime, but I still spend as many days as I can in treestands or stalking wildground to keep my critter radar blazing away at maximum awareness.

Having abused my poor tattered ears with ferocious rock-n-roll guitar warfare for 60 years, I make it a point to compensate for this most critical sense by wearing my Walker’S Game Ear amplifiers when on the prowl. The difference from my naked ears to the enhanced is dramatic and hearing all the special sounds of the wild better connects  me with my surroundings and the critters I share it with.

On a single stroll this morning with my dogs Happy and Gonzo, my predator radar picked up a drumming grouse, squawking cranes, whistling wood ducks, a quack here & there, the subtle whistle of cedar waxwings, the pecking of downy woodpeckers and yellow belly sapsuckers, a chirping tufted titmouse, whirring humming birds, goldfinches, purple finches, chickadees, nuthatches, a Baltimore Oriel, rose breasted and evening grosbeaks, a kingfisher, a blue heron, redwing blackbirds galore, a cowbird, catbird, song sparrow, wrens, boisterous blue jays, robins, cardinals, a bluebird, a giant pileated woodpecker, geese, chattering red squirrels, burping frogs, hovering redtail and red shoulder hawks, a hooting owl, a glorious crowing cock pheasant, cooing doves, scampering russet, grey and black fox squirrels,  flag waiving whitetails, a woodchuck and a raccoon, a tail splashing beaver, a swimming muskrat, a fleeting mink, a babbling brook, a friendly wind and a stunning sky.

I realized a long, long time ago that the hunting lifestyle has much more to do about immeasurable experiences far before and beyond the actually killing of game.

Today I marked where we will pick next year’s wild asparagus, some likely looking morel haunts, and a few prime spots for next weeks “berry alerts” for my grandkids.

Like everything in life, more joys and more satisfaction is available based on one’s attentiveness for that ever intriguing and stimulating higher level of awareness in everything we do, especially deerhunting.

That mantra right there is why I decided long ago in my youth to remain clean and sober, never allowing brain fogging poisons into my sacred temple that would clearly interfere with my aim small miss small mystical flight of the arrow dreams or my cravings to understand the critters in order to get up close and personal with them.

Being one with nature will make us a better predator, and constantly tweaking and revving up our amazing human sensual radar will help us catch up with God’s miraculous and unfair animal advantage. There is no “fair chase.” The animals are cheating! Try harder. Think harder. Hunt harder.

(And yes! Last week I did kill that New Brunswick bear!!)
